By some miracle, Karen Miller had managed to make a plate meat and vegetable pie with chips and peas. They were back on the patio eating the food with relish as Karen nibbled on a sandwich.

'Are you sure you don't want any of this?' Odette asked.

Karen shook her head. 'No thanks, I love to cook but I've never been a big eater,' she explained.

'Have you managed to rest?' Lasser asked.

'Well, I cleaned the house and…'

'You don't have to do that, you're a guest not the hired help,' Lasser interrupted.

She smiled shyly and nodded. 'It gave me something to do and besides it's nice to have a place to clean even if it is just for a few days.'

Lasser munched on a chip, his face thoughtful. 'OK, here's the deal, if you want to tidy the house that's fine, if you want to cook then I'm all for it but you do it for a salary.'

Karen's eyes widened in astonishment. 'I can't do that.'

'You can and you will. Look, I'll be straight with you, finding you a place to stay won't be easy, you know what this town is like, the hostel is full, we have asylum seekers in hotels and people on the streets. So, for now you stay here and I pay you one fifty a week to keep us fed and watered how does that sound?'

Karen's eyes widened even further and then they were suddenly full of sparkling tears.

'Are you serious?'

Lasser nodded. 'Of course I am.'

Odette looked from one to the other and then she smiled. 'Don't worry, Karen, while I'm staying here I'll go halves with Lasser. Besides he never spends money on anything, so believe me he can afford it.'

Karen clasped her hands beneath her chin and nodded. 'Are you really sure?'

'Positive, as you can probably guess neither of us really have the time for cooking and cleaning, we're out more than we're in so you would be doing us a big favour. Plus, you can save some of the cash for a rainy day.'

'I don't know what to say,' she mumbled.

'Just say yes,' Odette replied.

'OK then, yes, yes I'd love to.'

'Sorted,' Lasser said, before popping another chip into his mouth.

As soon as the plates were empty, Karen was on her feet and whisking them away, Lasser sparked up with a heavy sigh of contentment.

'Look at you, all pleased with yourself because you get out of doing the washing up.'

'And changing the sheets,' Lasser replied with a smile.

'Slave driver.'

'Listen, Odette, I didn't ask her just to try and keep you here, you do know that don't you?'

She looked at him and smiled. 'Of course I do, and to be honest I'm not in any mad rush to return to the flat just yet.'

Lasser almost reminded her that a couple of days earlier she had seemed eager to get away but then he changed his mind. 'Good.'

'So, do you still think it's worth staking the college out tonight?' she asked.

Blowing the smoke out through his nose, he nodded.
